‘REAL’ FOOTBALL, FORD’S THEATRE

With the World Series winding down and the National Football League stars returning to work, weekend viewers may find it difficult to tear themselves away from the balls, strikes and passes. But there are other reasons to watch television this weekend.

One is the second season of “California Stories,” KCET’s documentary series that premieres tonight at 7:30 on Channel 28 with “My Enemy Is My Friend,” a look at attempts by Los Angeles Arab and Jewish residents to talk to each other. (See Howard Rosenberg’s review.) . . .

Later, the annual “All Star Gala at Ford’s Theatre” begins at 9 p.m. on ABC. This year’s celebration of the performing arts in Washington features Mikhail Baryshnikov, Don Johnson and David Copperfield. Bea Arthur hosts.

Viewers with cable can watch “Billy Joel From Leningrad, U.S.S.R.” at 10 p.m. on Home Box Office. The film chronicles the first fully staged American rock concert in the Soviet Union.
