Pit Bull Is Just Along for Ride on Theft Spree
A man apparently fond of pit bulls and Suzuki Samurais is wanted for stealing two of the jeep-like vehicles and burglarizing three others while his dog accompanied him, police said.
The pit bullterrier was not used as a weapon or a threat, Newport Beach police said. Why the thief brought his pet along is a mystery.
“Maybe he was just lonesome, I don’t know,” said community relations officer Ken Stoddard.
As for the Samurai preference, Stoddard noted that they have soft, convertible tops that are easy to break into.
A River Avenue resident was awakened at 3 a.m. Wednesday and ran outside to find a man departing in the resident’s vehicle. He caught up with the Samurai in a cul-de-sac off Superior Avenue where the driver jumped out, at which point the two fought.
The pit bull did not get involved.
The suspect broke away and escaped on foot, his pit bull following. A short time later three more Samurais were burglarized and a fourth was stolen.
