Los Angeles Schools Consider Pros, Cons of Year-Round Schedules
When I was in grammar school, candidates for student office sometimes campaigned with promises of no homework and more recess. We didn’t vote for them then, and we shouldn’t vote for them now. But because we have elected representatives who make impossible promises, we now face a deteriorating quality of education and other social services.
If school board members proceed to inaugurate year-round schools, they will, at the expense of children, only be putting off the inevitable need for sufficient funds.
Taxes should be viewed as an investment in our future, and the concern should be that the burden is distributed fairly. The children of this country are being stolen from through deficit spending and cheap education. Keep summer vacations and force Gov. George Deukmejian’s hand.
