Los Angeles Schools Consider Pros, Cons of Year-Round Schedules

Share

I was dismayed to read the decision to convert the Los Angeles school system to a year-round calendar is being reconsidered rather than put into effect. The numerous advantages of such a conversion far outweigh any anticipated disadvantages. While living in Las Vegas, I observed my younger brother’s transition to year-round calendar.

At first he was very negative about the switch, mainly due to the loss of his summer vacation. However, once he got into the flow of the new school year he began to excel and enjoy his classes. He felt school was less of an ordeal because he had more breaks. He discovered he was able to retain more of what he learned with less time between sessions. I feel the year-round calendar provides a better learning environment. The students are more focused on the task at hand and can acquire more knowledge.

The Los Angeles public school system is the second largest in the nation and it would unquestionably be to our country’s advantage if we could turn out an even more promising citizenry.
