Local News in Brief : Group Backs Court Officer
The Italian-American Lawyers’ Assn. came to the defense Friday of a Glendale Municipal Court commissioner who uttered a racial slur from the bench.
Paul Caruso, a past president of the 400-member organization, told reporters that the group had concluded from its own investigation that Commissioner Daniel F. Calabro is “completely a non-racist.”
“We feel Mr. Reiner’s conduct has been outrageous,” said Caruso, referring to Dist. Atty. Ira Reiner’s decision last August to prevent Calabro from hearing criminal cases because he used the word “nigger” in describing a case.
Caruso said that Calabro, the son of Italian immigrants, is not a member of his organization.
