Chula Vista
A police officer shot an unidentified man in the stomach Saturday night after the suspect lunged at the officer with a knife, authorities reported.
The man was listed in critical condition Sunday at UC San Diego Medical Center.
The incident began about 11:20 p.m. Saturday when Chula Vista police received a call about a man laying in the bushes at Vista Square Elementary School, 540 G St.
Officers Don Rhodes and Dennis Dodge found a man standing in a darkened area of the campus, alongside a sidewalk between some bushes and a building.
The suspect turned toward the officers, displayed a knife and began walking toward the officers, said Lt. Dean Girdner.
The officers conversed with the man but he refused to stop and the officers backed up several feet, Girdner said. The man then lunged at Rhodes and Rhodes shot him once in the stomach.
The suspect was taken to UC San Diego Medical Center for emergency surgery. An investigation is continuing.
