National League umpire Lee Weyer admitted he missed a call at first base in the seventh game of the World Series, and said he would be in favor of instant replay in certain situations.

“I know that I missed the one on Tom Herr,” Weyer, a major league umpire for 26 years, said in an interview with Fred Roggin of Channel 4. “I got blocked out on the play, I did not see the play. I thought he would be out.”

The play happened in the top of the sixth inning Sunday night with Herr on first base, one out and a 3-and-2 count on Jim Lindeman. The St. Louis Cardinals and Minnesota Twins were tied, 2-2.

Lindeman fouled off two pitches with Herr running, then Minnesota left-hander Frank Viola picked Herr off first. Kent Hrbek, the Twin first baseman, threw to second baseman Steve Lombardozzi, and Herr headed back toward first.

Lombardozzi threw toward first, past Hrbek to Viola, who was covering the base. Herr and Hrbek collided before Herr got back to first. Viola tagged Herr and Weyer called him out, but the replay clearly showed that Herr beat the tag.

Some thought Hrbek obstructed Herr, but Weyer disagreed, saying: “There was no way that was obstruction. Tom Herr went out of his way into Hrbek. When you do that, it’s not obstruction.”

As far as the possibility of using the instant replay is concerned, Weyer said: “When something happened like that, when I did get blocked out, I think maybe you could use it. As an everyday thing, no.”
