The Senate, reflecting widespread frustration with the airlines, passed a bill today designed to prod the carriers into doing a better job by spotlighting the quality of their service.

By an 88-5 vote, the lawmakers approved legislation that would require the airlines to report each month on how often their flights are canceled or late, baggage is misplaced and passengers are “bumped” off overbooked flights.
