NHL Roundup : Nordiques Survive Brawl and Beat the Bruins, 4-2

Peter Stastny scored two goals, one after a second-period brawl that resulted in nine ejections, and the Quebec Nordiques defeated the Boston Bruins, 4-2, Thursday night at Boston.

The brawl started 16 seconds into the second period when Boston’s Willi Plett and Quebec’s Gord Donnelly collided and began fighting along the boards.

When it was over, referee Dave Newell called two minor penalties, 10 fighting majors, eight game misconducts and a five-minute match penalty against Donnelly for kneeing Plett in the head as he lay on the ice.

Donnelly, Tommy Albelin, Normand Rochefort, Paul Gillis and Mike Eagles of Quebec, and Billy O’Dwyer, Jay Miller, Glen Wesley and John Blum of Boston were ejected.

The Nordiques got 75 minutes in penalties to 69 for the Bruins, but Quebec wound up with the power play that led to Stastny’s first goal 33 seconds later.

Jason Lafreniere and Anton Stastny also scored in the second period, giving the Nordiques a 3-0 lead.

Steve Kasper ended Quebec goaltender Mario Gosselin’s string of scoreless minutes over two games at 104:22 with Boston’s first goal in the third period. Cam Neely got the other Boston goal, his eighth of the season, with seven minutes remaining.

Peter Stastny scored his 11th goal of the season, into an empty net, with 30 seconds left.

In all, Newell whistled 222 minutes in penalties, 114 against Quebec and 108 against Boston.

St. Louis 3, Minnesota 2--Brian Sutter scored his second goal of the game in the opening minute of the third period to snap a tie and carry the Blues past the North Stars at Bloomington, Minn.

Minnesota’s Dave Archibald scored the first goal of the game at 4:48 of the second period, but St. Louis took the lead with power-play goals by Mark Hunter and Sutter midway through the second period.

The North Stars tied it again when Scott Bjugstad scored his fifth goal of the season at 18:01.

Toronto 4, Pittsburgh 0--Russ Courtnall scored two goals, and Allan Bester blocked 29 shots for his fourth career shutout as the Maple Leafs turned back the Penguins at Pittsburgh.

Al Iafrate and Tom Fergus also scored for Pittsburgh.
