San Diego Roundup : Tabb to Run in Marathon Nov. 8 : Weekend Races to Include 10K and Two-Mile Fun Run

Ron Tabb of Pacific Beach and John McCracken of Lincoln, Neb., are expected to compete in the eighth San Diego Marathon on Nov. 8.

It will be the culmination of a series of races and race-related activities that organizers are calling San Diego Marathon weekend.

Tabb has run the fifth-fastest marathon ever by an American. He completed the 1983 Boston Marathon in 2 hours 9 minutes 31 seconds. But this will be Tabb’s first marathon in two years because of hamstring problems. He is trying to qualify for the 1988 U.S. Olympic trials April 24 in Jersey City, N.J. The qualifying time is 2:20.

McCracken won the 1987 Long Beach Marathon with a time of 2:19:15. That qualified him for the Olympic trials.

The marathon begins at 7 a.m. at Casa del Prada in Balboa Park and ends at Mission Bay Park.

The Heart of San Diego 10K and a two-mile fun run both will begin at 7 a.m. on Nov. 7 as part of the weekend’s events. The 10K begins at Cabrillo National Monument and finishes on Spanish Landing across from Lindbergh Field. The fun run begins and ends at Spanish Landing.

Beginning Thursday, a runners’ expo will be held at the Omni San Diego Hotel near Horton Plaza. The expo opens at noon on Thursday, and 9 a.m. on both Nov. 6 and Nov. 7.

Former Padre Steve Garvey and several other sports celebrities will appear at the second Great Celebrity Sports Auction from 6:30 to 10:30 p.m. Sunday at the Neiman-Marcus department store in the Fashion Valley shopping center.

Also expected to attend are 1984 Olympic gold-medal winners Edwin Moses (hurdles), Steve Lundquist (swimming) and Candy Costie-Burke (synchronized swimming). In addition, Socker Juli Veee and former Charger kicker Rolf Benirschke are expected.

Some of the things to be auctioned include an individual batting clinic with Padre Tony Gwynn, a round of golf with Charger Dan Fouts, a bronzed basketball shoe once worn by Detroit Piston center Bob Lanier and an autographed Stars & Stripes shirt worn by Dennis Conner during the America’s Cup. Autographed sports memorabilia from such athletes as Magic Johnson, O.J. Simpson and Joe DiMaggio also will be available.

The auction will benefit the PACE Career Development Center, which Garvey helped found to assist athletes in finding other careers after their sports careers end. For reservations and information, call 530-0606.

More than 150 golfers, including the host, are expected to play in the Steve Garvey Scripps Memorial golf tournament Monday at the La Jolla Country Club, beginning at 10 a.m.

Jennifer Davis-Cole, Jennie Hinkle and Geneva Faulkner of San Diego are expected to be among the 45 pros who will compete in the three-round Women’s Professional Golf Tour Cottonwood Classic, which will be held at Cottonwood Country Club. Tiemi Kantor of Carlsbad and Debbie Skinner of Chula Vista are also expected to compete. Coronado’s Thom Hunt, winner of the 1986 San Diego Holiday Bowl Marathon, will speak at Alvarado Hospital Medical Center’s running training seminar. The seminar, which is designed to help both novice and experienced runners learn to reach peak performance, will be held Thursday at 7:30 p.m. at the medical center, which is located at 6655 Alvarado Rd. in East San Diego.
