Bad Man Out

I’m quite happy that Eliot Asinof’s book “Eight Men Out,” about the Chicago White Sox World Series scandal of 1919, is finally being filmed (“The Fall Guys,” by Bill Steigerwald, Oct. 25).

But in reading the article I was surprised to see no mention of the man who has been associated with the infamous scandal and who has been identified as the architect of today’s crime syndicate, Arnold Rothstein.

Rothstein, commonly known as A. R., was constantly mentioned in “Eight Men Out,” and in Leo Katcher’s brilliant biography of Rothstein, “The Big Bankroll” (1958), one entire chapter (“The Man Who Fixed the World Series”) was dedicated to the “Black Sox” affair.

I’m certain that when the film is released Rothstein will be prominently featured. . . . After all, to many old-timers and students of crime, he was the godfather!
