Among Bette Midler’s upcoming projects: “For Our Boys,” in development for Fox. It’s about a USO performer whose political awareness grows after gigs in World War II, Korea and Vietnam.

There’s an interesting subplot, too, in the script by Neal Jimenez (“River’s Edge”) and Lindy Laub.

You see, paralleling Midler’s character is a popular male comic--who, a source tells us, is loosely patterned after a real-life popular male comic who’s long served the troops. But unlike Midler, the male comic doesn’t make a political metamorphosis.

A rep for Midler’s All-Girl Productions didn’t want to elaborate: “Let’s just say that, right now, as scripted, there’s a male character who’s the kind of person who’s a gung-ho, my-country-before-anything-else type, who never thinks to question what’s going on.

“Keep in mind,” she added, “that we’re still very early into this project and that some characters will come--and go. Except for Bette’s.”
