COLLEGE FOOTBALL : Oklahoma Romps to 71-10 Victory : No. 1 Sooners Rush for 565 Yards in Win Over Jayhawks

Facing a team it should dominate, Oklahoma played with something more effective than emotion--precision.

Patrick Collins ran for two touchdowns and six other Sooners scored rushing touchdowns in a 565-yard ground assault Saturday, powering top-ranked Oklahoma to a 71-10 thrashing of Kansas.

“There was no intensity level at all out there today,” Oklahoma Coach Barry Switzer said. “We had them ready to play mentally and physically, but there was no emotional involvement in the ballgame.

“It’s all execution and we executed.”

The 71 points were the most ever allowed by Kansas. Last year, Nebraska scored 70 points against the Jayhawks. The 61-point margin was the most lopsided loss since being shut out, 61-0, to Iowa Navy Pre-Flight in 1942.

Switzer said it could have been worse if the field had been dry.

“The wet field in the first half allowed them to have some offensive success,” Switzer said after the game, which was played in a steady rain for most of the first half. “We probably could have run a lot better had we had better traction.”

Kansas lost to Oklahoma, 64-3, last year and has dropped 13 of its last 14 games.

“That game was just a butt-kicking by a good football team that is ranked No. 1 in the country and deserves to be ranked No. 1 in the country,” said Kansas Coach Bob Valesente.

“When you’re a young program trying to build, you have to suffer. That’s part of building a program.”

Anthony Stafford, Lydell Carr, Damon Stell, Jamelle Holieway, Rotnei Anderson and John Green each ran for touchdowns as Oklahoma improved to 8-0 overall and 4-0 in the Big Eight. The Sooners have won 17 straight.

The other Oklahoma scores came on a 58-yard pass play from Holieway to Keith Jackson and a 17-yard interception return by Brad McBride. R.D. Lashar added a 23-yard field goal. Also, Rickey Dixon intercepted two passes that led to scores.

Kansas (1-7, 0-4) scored its points in the fourth period, getting a 27-yard field goal by Louis Klemp and a 30-yard scoring pass from back-up Kevin Verdugo to Willie Vaughn.
