A 58-year-old man was critically injured when his experimental aircraft crashed in the backyard of a Ramona home Sunday morning, the Sheriff’s Department reported.

The pilot, identified as Robert Lipner, 58, was extricated by firemen from the wreckage and taken by Life Flight to Palomar Medical Center in Escondido, where he was listed Sunday evening in critical condition following extensive surgery for internal injuries, a hospital spokesman said.

A Federal Aviation Administration spokesman said the cause of the crash was being investigated.

A witness to the crash, Brian Seiben, said the plane appeared to have lost power moments before it crashed behind a residence in the 2000 block of Montecito Road, about a mile from the Ramona Airport.

The FAA identified the aircraft was a Monet-Moni.

There was no one else in the plane and no one on the ground was injured, the Sheriff’s Department said.
