Share

The driver of a truck rolling out of control on a downhill stretch of the Golden State Freeway was killed Monday when the vehicle turned over on him as he apparently attempted to jump out, authorities said.

The California Highway Patrol said the 3:50 p.m. accident occurred in the southbound lanes of the freeway near Castaic, about a mile south of Templin Highway. The driver’s name was not released pending notification of next of kin.

Witnesses reported seeing the driver attempt to jump from the cab as the 18-wheeler, hauling a load of lettuce, hit an embankment and rolled over, authorities said.

Authorities said the man could have lived through the accident had he stayed in the cab with his seat belt fastened.
