A theatrical concert version of “Magdalena” by Heitor Villa-Lobos, not performed since its short Los Angeles run in 1948, will be presented Nov. 23 in New York at Lincoln Center’s Alice Tully Hall. The light opera by the Brazilian composer was first performed by the Los Angeles Civic Light Opera on July 26, 1948. The revival will star Judy Kaye, George Rose, Faith Esham, Kevin Gray and John Raitt (who was in the original cast). Producer-conductor Evans Haile called the work “a cross-cultural event” that has sparked interest from other groups as well, including the United States Information Agency and Citibank, who are thinking about taking it on tour in South America.
