Local News in Brief : Irvine : Refugee Resettlement Will Be Envoy’s Topic
Bruce Beardsley, the U.S. official responsible for overseeing immigration policy in Southeast Asia, will discuss resettlement of Indochinese refugees tonight at UC Irvine.
The counselor for immigration affairs at the U.S. Embassy in Thailand, Beardsley directs the United Nations-sponsored Orderly Departure Program, which was established in 1979 as an alternative to the Vietnamese boat people debacle.
Beardsley’s appearance, at 7:30 p.m. in Room 101 of the Physical Sciences Building, is sponsored by the Pearl Project, a student organization. For the past year, the Pearl Project has been active in assisting the settlement of Indochinese refugees. The group also does fund raising and political research, as well as lobbying to ease the refugee crisis.
