Local News in Brief : Revamped Panels Urged
Three members of the Pasadena Board of Directors have called for the resignations in January of all members of municipal boards and commissions so that the panels can be re-formed to better represent all neighborhoods in the city.
Directors Rick Cole, Jess Hughston and William Thomson said the recommendation is aimed at correcting the under-representation of several poor and middle-class neighborhoods.
The recommendation, which has the support of the majority of the seven-member board, would affect more than 250 volunteers who oversee issues such as redevelopment, land use and public transportation.
According to an informal survey of 12 of the most influential commissions, nearly half of the appointments go to residents of the city’s richest neighborhoods such as Linda Vista, Oak Knoll and San Rafael.
About 10% to 15% of the commissioners come from poorer areas, such as northwest Pasadena.
