One of the world’s most extensive corporate collections of news footage was established this week with the formation of ABC/Weintraub Pathe, a merger of ABC News Library in New York and London’s Pathe News Archives, recently acquired by Los Angeles movie mogul Jerry Weintraub. The combined collection contains more than 8,500 hours of newsreel footage spanning 1896-1970, plus more recent news footage from the early 1960s to the present. Weintraub and ABC News President Roone Arledge, co-chairmen of the new entity, plan to repackage their library holdings into programs for all types of audiences and media.
