“Street Smart,” the drama about journalistic ethics starring Christopher Reeve, is doing surprisingly well in the video rental market. Though it wasn’t a box-office hit, it’s No. 17 on the Billboard magazine rental chart after two weeks. Renters love thrillers, and that’s why three of them are among the longest-running titles on the rental chart--”The Bedroom Window” (No. 13), “Black Widow” (No. 14) and “Dead of Winter” (No. 27). “The Godfather,” priced at $29.95, is selling again. It’s No. 5 on the sales chart, which measures sales to retailers and distributors. “Lady and the Tramp” and “An American Tail” are tops on the kidvid sales chart. On the health and fitness chart, “Callanetics” and “Jane Fonda’s New Workout” are the leaders.

A perfect Halloween movie, “Creepshow 2,” which debuted at No. 16, was a popular rental last weekend. But it’s probably an effective enough fright film to do good rental business without a boost from Halloween.
