Local News in Brief : Supervisors Get Pay OK

Share

Breaking a 35-year practice, Los Angeles County supervisors who now sit on various boards and commissions without compensation will be able to receive extra pay for the extra duty after a recent ruling by county lawyers.

County Counsel De Witt Clinton, in an Oct. 20 opinion, determined that county supervisors can receive compensation in addition to their $81,505-a-year salaries for sitting on the governing board of another public body. Supervisors who serve on transportation agencies or the Coliseum Commission, for example, will be eligible for per diem checks of from $25 to $100 per meeting.

A 1952 ballot measure prohibited supervisors “from receiving any compensation for services rendered to any other public or governmental agency.”

But Clinton’s ruling followed the state Legislature’s enactment of bills for new governing bodies requiring the personal participation of board members.
