Supreme Court Justice William J. Brennan Jr. blocked a trial for former Massachusetts Gov. Edward J. King’s $3.6-million libel lawsuit against the Boston Globe and one of its columnists. Brennan ordered that the trial, scheduled to begin in January, be postponed until the full Supreme Court considers an appeal aimed at killing King’s suit. Brennan’s order said that if the appeal is turned down, the postponement “terminates automatically.” King sued over various articles and editorial cartoons published in 1981.
