Leon Wood, Four-Year NBA Veteran Out of Fullerton, Is Waived by Nets

Leon Wood, a four-year veteran out of Cal State Fullerton, was waived by the New Jersey Nets Thursday.

Wood, who was a Division I All-American as a Titan, played in 76 games for the Nets last season and averaged 7.3 points per game. He set a club mark by hitting 60 three-point field goals.

Wood, who was the point guard on the gold medal-winning 1984 U.S. Olympic basketball team, was the 10th player chosen in the 1984 NBA draft. During his rookie season with the Philadelphia 76ers, he played in 38 of 82 games, averaging just 7.1 minutes in appearances and 3.2 points per game.

On Jan. 10, 1986, the 76ers traded Wood to the Washington Bullets for Kenny Green, then a rookie forward from Wake Forest.

In his first game with Washington, Wood scored a career-high 17 points. He followed that with a 9-point performance against the Clippers. In his third game as a Bullet, with the Chicago Bulls leading in the third quarter, 98-87, Wood scored Washington’s next 16 points and finished the night with 22 as the Bullets won by 4. Two days later, another career high--25 against Milwaukee. The next game--30 points and 8 assists against New Jersey.

Wood finished the season averaging 7.8 points and hitting 28 of 85 three-point field goals.
