A federal jury Friday found state Sen. Michael B. Mitchell and his brother, former state Sen. Clarence M. Mitchell III, guilty of endeavoring to obstruct a congressional investigation of the Wedtech Corp.

The jury also found Michael Mitchell guilty of two counts of wire fraud and his brother guilty of one wire fraud charge. The wire fraud counts stemmed from their acceptance of money from Wedtech, a bankrupt defense contractor based in New York City, for unlawful purposes in a scheme to defraud the company’s shareholders.

Michael, 41, and Clarence, 47, both Baltimore Democrats, were acquitted of a conspiracy charge brought in connection with the crimes.

U.S. District Judge Norman Ramsey allowed the brothers to remain free pending sentencing, tentatively set for Dec. 29. Michael Mitchell faces a maximum of 15 years in jail while Clarence faces a maximum 10-year prison term.
