Tennis Roundup : Leconte Upsets Cash in Quarterfinals

Henri Leconte of France upset second-seeded Pat Cash of Australia, 6-4, 6-7, 6-3, Friday in the quarterfinals of the $815,000 Paris Open tennis tournament, easing local disappointment over the loss of third-seeded Yannick Noah.

Leconte advanced to today’s semifinals, along with Michiel Schapers of the Netherlands, Tim Mayotte and Brad Gilbert.

Mayotte defeated Amos Mansdorf of Israel, 6-4, 6-2, and Gilbert beat Kevin Curren, 7-5, 6-4. An injury forced Noah to withdraw from his match with Schapers.

Leconte ousted Cash in a three-hour match that featured a second-set tiebreaker in which Cash fought off three match points.

Noah, who tore a muscle in his abdomen, was told he will probably be sidelined for at least three weeks.

Jim Grabb, who earlier upset Mats Wilander, was eliminated in the quarterfinals of the $525,000 Stockholm Open by Sweden’s Jonas Svensson, 6-1, 6-3.

Stefan Edberg overcame a slight hand injury to beat Peter Lundgren, 6-1, 7-6. Anders Jarryd defeated Martin Laurendeau, 6-2, 6-4, and Magnus Gustafsson downed Matt Anger, 6-2, 6-4.

Edberg injured his racket hand in the second set. “It’s a bit swollen and it feels stiff,” he said. “But it didn’t hurt when I was playing.”

At Worcester, Mass., Chris Evert beat Barbara Potter, 1-6, 6-1, 6-3, and reached the semifinals of a $250,000 Virginia Slims tournament.

Also advancing were Pam Shriver, who defeated Bettina Bunge, 6-4, 6-4; Gabriela Sabatini, who beat Lori McNeil, 6-2, 6-3, and Helena Sukova, who downed Eva Pfaff, 6-2, 6-1.
