Europe overwhelmed Japan, 10-2, for its second straight victory and took the lead in the the $950,000 World Championship of Golf at Inagi, Japan.
The Europeans, who won the Ryder Cup in the United States for the first time in September, led the competition with 17 points, followed by Australia-New Zealand with 13 points, the United States with 10 and Japan with 8.
The Australia-New Zealand team beat the Americans, 7-5, on the second of three days of round-robin play among six-member teams representing the Professional Golf Assn. tours.
Three members of Australia-New Zealand beat their American opponents--Rodger Davis defeating U.S. Open champion Scott Simpson, 70-72; Greg Norman downing PGA top money-winner Curtis Strange, 68-70, and Ian Baker-Finch topping Mark Calcavecchia, 68-73.
The American winners were Payne Stewart over Brian Jones, 70-72, and team captain Tom Kite over Peter Senior, 69-72. Graham Marsh of Australia and American Lanny Wadkins tied, 73-73.
