COLLEGE FOOTBALL : Big Ten Roundup : Hoosiers Rally, Beat Illinois, 34-22

Coach Bill Mallory didn’t have to do a thing to fire up his Indiana team at halftime. The Hoosiers did it by themselves.

Then Mallory watched as the Hoosiers set up a Big Ten title showdown with Michigan State next week by coming from 13 points down to beat Illinois, 34-22, Saturday at Bloomington, Ind.

“The seniors gave a pretty good talk,” Mallory said. “We were determined to come out fighting in the second half.”

Indiana (7-2 overall, 5-1 in the conference) trailed, 16-3, at halftime but erupted for four touchdowns and a field goal while holding Illinois (3-5-1, 2-3-1) to six points and six first downs in the second half.

Dave Kramme, subbing for ailing quarterback Dave Schnell, ran for one touchdown and connected with Ernie Jones on a 58-yard scoring pass play. Schnell had an emergency appendectomy Saturday morning.

Two of Indiana second-half touchdowns were set up by fumble recoveries on kickoffs by Mike Dumas, including a clinching two-yard scoring run by Anthony Thompson with 2:29 left.

Michigan State 45, Purdue 3--Blake Ezor rushed for 151 yards and a touchdown and Lorenzo White ran for 144 yards and another score as the 15th-ranked Spartans beat the Boilermakers at East Lansing, Mich.

The Spartans (6-2-1, 5-0-1) will go to the Rose Bowl for the first time since 1966 if they beat Indiana.

White’s 144 yards give him 1,075 this season and 4,129 in his career. The Spartans rushed for 416 yards, and held the Boilermakers to minus 18 yards on the ground.

Michigan State quarterback Bobby McAllister passed for two touchdowns and ran for another.

Purdue (2-6-1, 2-4) had one first down and minus 11 yards of total offense in the second half.

Wisconsin 26, Ohio State 24--Todd Gregoire’s fourth field goal of the game with 10:49 left lifted the Badgers to an upset of the Buckeyes at Madison, Wis.

Wisconsin (3-6, 1-5) took the ball away from the Buckeyes (5-3-1, 3-3) seven times in the game and held them scoreless in the second half.

The Badgers pulled within 24-20 with 7:09 left in the third quarter when cornerback Robert Williams intercepted Tom Tupa’s pass and ran 35 yards for a touchdown.

Michigan 30, Minnesota 20--Leroy Hoard and Jamie Morris scored in an 89-second span of the third quarter, and the Wolverines rallied from 10 points down to beat the Gophers at Minneapolis.

Morris, who carried 29 times for 149 yards, passed Butch Woolfolk to become Michigan’s all-time rushing leader with 3,893 yards. He leads the conference with 1,203 yards this season.

Minnesota (5-4, 2-4) was leading, 17-7, and driving for what could have been a clinching score in the third quarter. But Michigan (6-3, 4-2) stopped Darrell Thompson, who earlier had a Big Ten record 98-yard touchdown run, an inch short of a first down at the Wolverine 23.
