COLLEGE FOOTBALL : East Roundup : Syracuse Talks It Over, Blows Navy Out of the Water

Syracuse Coach Dick MacPherson didn’t raise his voice at halftime, he used the soft-sell.

His eighth-ranked Orangemen responded with a 34-10 victory over Navy Saturday at Annapolis, Md.

“Don’t get selfish,” MacPherson told his team after it took a 13-3 lead into the locker room. “Don’t get greedy. Don’t get caught up with the score. Just go out and do the same things you’ve been doing.”

Syracuse (9-0) just did them better after that.

The Midshipmen were unable to stop quarterback Don McPherson, who passed for two touchdowns and broke his season passing yarding record.

McPherson completed 11 of 20 passes for 197 yards before coming out midway through the fourth quarter. He has 1,884 passing yards this season, breaking the record of 1,827 yards he set last year.

Fullback Daryl Johnston ran for two other touchdowns to wrap up the victory.

Dartmouth 12, Columbia 10--Carl Romero kicked a 32-yard field goal with 1:45 left at New York as the Big Green extended the Lions’ major-college record losing streak to 39 games.

Kurt Dasbach missed a chance to give Columbia (0-8, 0-5) a victory when his 36-yard field goal attempt with 19 seconds remaining went wide left.

Dartmouth improved to 2-6, 1-4.

Pittsburgh 17, Rutgers 0--Craig Heyward rushed for a season-high 175 yards and a touchdown as the Panthers dominated the Scarlet Knights at East Rutherford, N.J.

With scouts from the Peach, Sun and Independence bowls in attendance, Pitt (6-3) virtually ended any bowl hopes of Rutgers (5-4).

Yale 28, Cornell 9--Mike Stewart scored touchdowns on three short runs and the Bulldogs claimed a share of the Ivy League lead with Harvard by beating the Big Red at New Haven, Conn.

Stewart scored on runs of 1 and 2 yards in the first half and added a 1-yard dive two seconds into the fourth quarter for his third of the game as Yale (6-2, 4-1) won its fifth straight game. Cornell is 4-4, 3-2.

Holy Cross 41, Harvard 6--Quarterback Jeff Wiley passed for two touchdowns, and Gordie Lockbaum scored a touchdown and passed for another as the undefeated Crusaders routed the Ivy League-leading Crimson at Worcester, Mass.

The Crusaders (9-0), the No. 1-ranked Division I-AA team in the country, held the Crimson (7-2) to minus 13 yards rushing. Linebacker Tom Smith sacked Harvard’s Tom Yohe four times.

Penn 23, Lafayette 14--Tailback Chris Flynn rushed for 95 yards and Jim Grass kicked three field goals as the Quakers won at Easton, Pa.

The Quakers (3-5) scored before their offense took the field when Scott Sandler ran 54 yards for a touchdown on a punt return. Lafayette is 4-5.

West Virginia 28, Virginia Tech 16--A.B. Brown rushed for 169 yards and a touchdown and Major Harris threw a touchdown pass to rally the Mountaineers (5-4) past the Hokies at Morgantown, W.Va.

Virginia Tech (1-8) led, 10-7, at halftime on a 45-yard field goal by Chris Kinzer and a four-yard touchdown pass from Erik Chapman to Brian McCall. Chapman later scored on a 40-yard run.

Colgate 39, Princeton 15--Kenny Gamble scored 4 touchdowns and rushed for 123 yards as the Red Raiders trounced the Tigers at Princeton, N.J.

Gamble returned the second-half kickoff 93 yards for a touchdown to give Colgate (6-4) a 26-0 lead. He also scored on runs of 10, 18 and 19 yards. Princeton is 5-3.

Brown 10, Lehigh 7--Alex Kos kicked a 22-yard field goal with 10 seconds left at Bethlehem, Pa, to lift the Bruins past the Engineers.

Lehigh (4-5) scored on a four-yard run by Paul Sims early in the second quarter, but Brown (5-3) pulled even five minutes later on a one-yard run by Kirk Little, who had 135 yards in 21 carries.
