UC San Diego Loses on Penalty Kicks

Jerry O’Hara scored on the final penalty kick to give Cal State San Bernardino a 1-0 victory over UC San Diego in the NCAA Division III men’s soccer West-Midwest Regional final at La Jolla Saturday.

O’Hara’s shot broke a 3-3 tie in penalty kicks. The match came down to a shootout after the teams were tied, 0-0, after 45 minutes of regulation and 20 minutes of overtime.

UCSD (13-6-2) fell behind, 1-0, in penalty kicks after its first two shots were blocked by goalie Randy Green. The Tritons, ranked 13th in the nation in Division III, tied the shootout, 3-3, to set up O’Hara’s winning shot, which rolled into the left side of the net.

The Tritons had several scoring opportunities in the match. UCSD had nine corner kicks to Cal State San Bernardino’s one.

This is the second straight year UCSD has lost in the playoffs on penalty kicks. The Tritons lost, 1-0, to Washington University of Missouri in the quarterfinals last year.

Cal State San Bernardino, ranked No. 8, is making its first postseason appearance. The Coyotes (14-2-3) advance to the quarterfinals with the victory.

SDSU 4, Loyola Marymount 0--Kyle Whittemore scored twice to lead eighth-ranked SDSU to a nonconference men’s soccer victory over Loyola Marymount at home. Freshman Eric Wynalda scored a goal and Curt Lewis made good on a penalty kick for the Aztecs (16-5).
