Science / Medicine : Gauging Likelihood of Quakes

Share

Government scientists trying to gauge the threat of earthquakes to nuclear plants say they will use military satellites to determine when and where quakes might strike east of the Rockies. The multi-year study, which will use the satellites along with ground-based radio receivers to measure ground movement to the nearest inch over distances of up to 1,000 miles, begins this week.

National Geodetic Survey scientists will calculate distances between 45 ground sites by measuring radio signals sent by five satellites to receivers at the sites.
