Jessica Has Final Foot Surgery

MIDLAND, Tex. — Doctors today performed a final operation on Jessica McClure’s foot, injured during her 58-hour ordeal in an abandoned well last month, and said the big toe no longer is in danger.

Dr. Shelton Viney, a vascular surgeon at Midland Memorial Hospital, said the morning operation grafted skin from the 19-month-old’s right thigh onto her foot, covering wounds of a procedure performed to relieve swelling. Viney said the surgery should be her last on the foot. Doctors also removed stitches from her scalp today. There is no longer any concern about Jessica’s big toe on her right foot, Viney said. The little toe of that foot was amputated last week.
