Local News in Brief : Paramedic Hearing Slated

Share

A public hearing is scheduled Nov. 23 in Hawthorne to hear ideas from residents on ways to pay for a second paramedic unit, after last week’s defeat of a property tax measure that would have financed the unit.

The hearing was suggested by Mayor Betty Ainsworth and supported by other council members.

The tax proposal, Proposition H, garnered 52.08% of the votes cast at the polls, but a two-thirds majority was necessary for passage. The proposal would have added about $16 to each household’s tax bill for seven years to provide the $300,000 annual cost of a second paramedic unit.

The council emphasized the need to explore all methods of expanding paramedic services, but several members expressed reservations about contracting with the Los Angeles County Fire Department.

Budget cuts to finance a second paramedic unit will be considered during a staff meeting scheduled by City Manager R. Kenneth Jue for Tuesday.
