Schlosberg Named President of The Times : Wright, Goldmark Are Appointed to Key Posts at Times Mirror

Richard T. Schlosberg III has been named president and chief operating officer of the Los Angeles Times, effective Jan. 1, it was announced Thursday.

Schlosberg, 43, currently publisher and chief executive of the Denver Post, succeeds Donald F. Wright, who has been appointed senior vice president of Times Mirror, the Los Angeles-based company that owns The Times and other media properties. Earlier this year, Times Mirror agreed to sell the Denver Post to an affiliate of Media News Group.

Times Mirror also announced Thursday that Peter C. Goldmark Jr. has been named senior vice president of Times Mirror. Goldmark has been serving as group vice president for Eastern newspapers for Times Mirror.

In his new capacity, Schlosberg will oversee all operations at The Times except news and editorial, which will remain under the direction of Editor and Executive Vice President William F. Thomas. Both will report to Tom Johnson, publisher and chief executive of The Times.

Schlosberg has been publisher and chief executive of the Denver Post since July, 1983. Before joining that newspaper, he was president of Harte-Hanks Newspaper Operations and senior vice president of the parent company and had responsibility for overseeing operations of Harte-Hanks’ 28 daily newspapers.

A native of Oklahoma, Schlosberg graduated from the U.S. Air Force Academy and Harvard Business School.

The promotions of Goldmark and Wright follow the retirement of Dow W. Carpenter Jr., 60, Times Mirror senior vice president overseeing book, magazine and cable television operations. Carpenter, who has been a Times Mirror executive since 1965, will become a consultant for the company. Robert F. Erburu, chairman and chief executive of Times Mirror, said the promotions are part of an ongoing management succession plan.

In his new job, Wright, 53, will be responsible for Times Mirror’s broadcast and cable television properties and will remain active in the corporation’s newspaper operations. Wright, who became president of The Times in January, 1982, oversaw the paper during a period of record growth in circulation, advertising revenues and profits.

Before joining The Times, Wright was president of Newsday, Times Mirror’s newspaper on Long Island, N.Y.

Goldmark, 46, has been with Times Mirror since August, 1985. Before that, he served as executive director of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey for eight years and as New York state budget director for 2 1/2 years. He is a graduate of Harvard.

Goldmark will continue to supervise Times Mirror’s Eastern newspaper operations in New York and will also oversee the company’s magazine publishing activities.

Both Goldmark and Wright will become members of the Times Mirror Management Committee. Other members include Erburu; David Laventhol, Times Mirror president; Publisher Johnson, Times Mirror vice chairman; Phillip L. Williams, vice chairman, and Charles R. Redmond, executive vice president.
