Local News in Brief : Marineland Meeting Set

The company that plans to develop a resort hotel and conference center at the Marineland site will discuss its plans with the Rancho Palos Verdes community at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 23 at St. Peter’s By the Sea Presbyterian Church, 6410 Palos Verdes Drive South. A timetable for the development, which is expected to start next year, will be outlined by planners for the Monaghan Co., which owns the property.

This is the third of several public events on the project, which, in part, are intended to help Monaghan avoid the public relations disaster that engulfed Harcourt Brace Javonovich Inc. when it bought Marineland last December, then moved the two star killer whales to Sea World park in San Diego, and abruptly closed the Rancho Palos Verdes landmark two months later amid public outcry.

“The community was left with a bad taste in its mouth and we feel it is important to have an open dialogue,” said John E. Corcoran, a former Marineland general manager who is a consultant for Monaghan.
