The Commerce Department ruled that color television picture tubes from four countries, including Canada and Japan, are being sold at unfairly low prices in the United States. The department’s ruling that picture tubes are being dumped means that duties of up to 33.5% might be imposed. The other countries involved are South Korea and Singapore. The International Trade Commission has 45 days to decide if the imports are damaging U.S. industry. If it decides that they are, U.S. Customs would be authorized to collect anti-dumping duties. The investigation into foreign-made color picture tubes was initiated in November, 1986, after five U.S. unions petitioned the government on behalf of American manufacturers.
