Trying to Redefine Rock

Share

I find it strange when the same term used to define artists like Eddie Cochran can also be applied to the likes of Boy George.

As are many adults today, I am alienated from modern pop (or is it modern pap ?). I find myself drawn to the music of the ‘60s and ‘70s and to the new crop of tunes coming from older, more experienced musicians.

The term rock ‘n’ roll worked when it was first used because the music it described was so different from anything else at the time. Pop music has grown so diverse that it can no longer be presented in one solid lump or “rock.”

I recently heard a quote from the late Woody Herman that I think is very appropriate: “There are only two kinds of music. Good music and bad music.”

Maybe we should just stick with that.
