Local News in Brief : 2 Deputies Settle Suit

Share

A Los Angeles couple reached an out-of-court settlement Monday with two sheriff’s deputies they had sued for conspiring to violate their civil rights by improperly arresting the husband in 1981 for allegedly assaulting a neighbor.

Attorney Antonio Rodriguez said a Superior Court jury was due to take up the damage phase of the civil lawsuit brought by Henry and Irene Vasquez, who live in Florence in unincorporated South Los Angeles, when attorneys for the deputies offered to settle the case.

Both sides agreed not to publicly talk about the cash settlement, but Rodriguez said his clients “were happy” about the outcome. The suit had sought more than $200,000 in damages.

In a verdict last Friday, the Superior Court jury found that deputies Michael Connolly and Douglas Obertholtzer concealed relevant information from prosecutors in the case.
