Two Orange County high school students are among 12 state finalists chosen to compete for a student’s seat on the state Board of Education, school officials said Tuesday.
Maryela Martinez, 15, a junior at Saddleback High School in Santa Ana, and John Godfrey, 16, a junior at Brea-Olinda High School in Brea, have been chosen to represent the county, a state education spokeswoman said.
Martinez, who is in the gifted-student program, submitted a two-page resume that listed 69 school and extracurricular activities, including her selection to Who’s Who Among American High School Students and essays for several contests.
Godfrey was described by a Brea-Olinda spokeswoman as a “gifted young man with a variety of interests.” In addition to holding a straight-A average, Godfrey was history and English student of the year, active in drama and student government and captain of the cross-country team.
They will travel to San Francisco for a Dec. 11 conference of the California School Boards Assn.
