It’s a Runaway for UCLA at Pauley

It has been a bad trip, made worse by the fact that they haven’t won a game.

And it was more of the same for the players of the Swedish club team Malbas as UCLA blew past them, 122-76, in an exhibition game in front of 2,916 in Pauley Pavilion Tuesday night.

It was the first chance UCLA Coach Walt Hazzard had to see his team play outside of scrimmages. But, given the one-sided nature of the game, it may not have afforded Hazzard as good a chance as he may have wanted to evaluate his team.

“On a game like tonight, it’s hard to gauge,” Hazzard said. “It wasn’t a real quality-type competitive situation. It was a workout, really. The other team played hard.

“You can still look at technical things, little details that need to be nailed down.”

Six Bruins scored in double figures, with Dave Immel leading in both points--19--and rebounds--9. Charles Rochelin and Gerald Madkins each scored 18 points, Greg Foster had 16 and Trevor Wilson 13.

David Duane of Malbas led all scorers with 22 points.

The Bruins scored the first seven points, causing a derisive cheer of “Shut out, shut out!” to rise from the crowd.

UCLA was the superior team in several areas, most noteably on the break.

The Bruins, substituting freely, were leading, 62-40, at the half.

The second half was more massacre than game. The Bruins scored 23 straight points and had, at one point, a 53-point lead.

Still, Hazzard waited until there were four minutes left to finish all his substitutions.

The Swedes began to rush shots and force the play in the second half, resulting in a 29% shooting night. The Bruins shot 65% for the game.

Malbas is the first Swedish club team to tour the United States, and they have recruited four Americans for the tour. Ritchie McKay and Tony Robinson from Seattle Pacific, Duane from Northern Arizona and Rodnie Taylor from Central Washington.

All four Americans started for Malbas. The team is 0-5 on its tour.

The Bruins officially open their season Friday by playing host to Oral Roberts at 7:30 in the first round of the Big Apple NIT at Pauley Pavilion.
