Long Beach : Yule Gift of Free Parking

Share

People who patronize the Belmont Shore area of Long Beach this holiday season will get a present adorned by a piece of garland and in the shape of a parking meter: free parking.

At the request of the Belmont Shore Business Assn. and Councilwoman Jan Hall, the City Council has approved suspending parking meter fees for the area between Dec. 11 and 24.

“It’s to promote good will and Christmas wishes from the area,” said Irene Day, a legislative aide for Hall.

Workers plan to take out the working mechanism of about 400 meters and replace the usual faceplate with a “Merry Christmas” sign and a piece of garland, according to Milton (Mac) McIntosh, the city’s superintendent in charge of parking meters.

This is the second year shoppers in the bustling, trendy 2nd Street district will enjoy the free parking, which otherwise would net about $4,500 in city revenue, McIntosh said.
