5 Hurt as Shelves Collapse at Court

A small claims supervisor was seriously injured and four other workers hurt when a wall of newly installed shelves and heavy files collapsed at the South Bay Municipal Court.

Betty Yenny, 62, suffered a fractured leg and cuts and bruises last Thursday, and is in good condition at Little Company of Mary Hospital in Torrance, hospital officials said.

It took more than 15 minutes for bailiffs and sheriff’s deputies to pull all of the workers from under the fallen shelves and files, said Court Administrator Cris Crawford.

The injured workers--Aida Morales, Betty Marcus, Angie Cabrera and Gladys Meiers--were treated at the hospital and released.

The shelves had been installed Nov. 7 as the final part of an office remodeling project by a private contractor.
