Local News in Brief : Road Straightening OKd
The La Habra Heights City Council has approved a controversial plan to straighten and widen Hacienda Boulevard, a heavily used road that cuts through the Puente Hills, connecting the San Gabriel Valley with southeast Los Angeles County.
The council Wednesday night unanimously voted to send the realignment proposal to the county, after adding a number of conditions intended to address the objections of opponents. Some people who want to keep the boulevard as it is complain that the improvements will turn the twisting, semi-rural road into a mini-freeway that will disrupt the community. If approved by the county, $11 million in county funds will be used to finance the rebuilding project.
The proposal calls for straightening the boulevard’s two major bends and widening the road from two to four lanes. The extra lanes would not be built until traffic increases from the current level of about 21,000 cars a day to 28,000 cars.
