Local News in Brief : Fullerton : Delta Chi Becomes First Fraternity to Get Permit

The city Planning Commission has voted unanimously to allow the Delta Chi fraternity to continue operating at its present location, a vote city officials said they hope will signal a climate of renewed cooperation.

Delta Chi became the first Cal State Fullerton fraternity to comply with a city ordinance requiring all Greek houses to obtain conditional use permits.

Under the ordinance, the houses have until Jan. 2 to obtain the permits or face possible expulsion from the residences they now occupy. So far, all six sororities have obtained the permits, but Delta Chi is the only one of the 10 existing fraternities to submit an application.

The ordinance was passed two years ago in an attempt to exert more control over the fraternities that have angered neighbors, who blame them for noise, litter and parking problems around fraternity row, located north of the university on Teri Place.

Fraternity members, city and school officials met recently to discuss the problems and concluded that the row may have to be relocated to another part of the city, although such a move would be years away.

Representatives of the Greek houses said other fraternities have not applied for the permits because they believe that the ordinance unfairly targets fraternities. But associate city planner Ted Commerdinger said the city will not consider rescinding the ordinance.
