Local News in Brief : Motorist Kills Himself
A man stabbed himself to death in his car on the San Gabriel River Freeway Thursday in full view of a California Highway Patrol officer who had stopped to find out what was wrong, officials said.
Kenneth Campbell, 23, of Commerce was pronounced dead at the scene of a self-inflicted stab wound to the chest, coroner’s spokesman Bob Dambacher said.
A CHP sergeant was driving home along the freeway about 1:55 a.m. when he stopped to assist a motorist in what he thought was a disabled car at the Beverly Boulevard exit, Sheriff’s Sgt. Richard Carroll said.
When the sergeant got out of his car, Campbell turned in the front seat and stabbed himself in the chest, Carroll said. A suicide note was found next to the victim.
