Voter registration books were burned and furniture was smashed at a regional election board in Haiti, hours after election officials disqualified two dozen candidates, a radio station reported. The Electoral Council ruled that the candidates could not run for the National Assembly because they had close ties to ousted dictator Jean-Claude Duvalier. Radio Haiti Inter reported that the vandalism took place at Hinche, 80 miles northeast of Port-au-Prince. A spokesman for the Electoral Council said there could be more violence before elections Nov. 29 but that polls will open “no matter what.”
