NAACP officials called for a boycott of the Atlanta Hawks of the National Basketball Assn. and baseball’s Atlanta Braves after the teams did not sign “fair share” agreements to increase black participation in management and team business.
Officials of the Atlanta branch of the National Assn. for the Advancement of Colored People and national NAACP Executive Director Benjamin Hooks met with officials of the Hawks and the Braves, both owned by Ted Turner.
Hooks said the NAACP wants “an empty stadium . . . an empty arena” at this season’s Hawks basketball games and next season’s Braves baseball games if the situation goes unresolved. The Hawks play next in Atlanta Saturday, but Hooks did not say when picket lines might go up at The Omni.
