I enjoyed reading about the experiences of Dr. Howard House in a Soviet hospital (“U.S. Doctor Tours Soviet Hospital as Heart Patient” by Jeannine Stein, Nov. 12). This letter was inspired by his last sentence: “And I’d love to have Russian doctors come here.”

Actually, Russian doctors have been coming here for many years on Soviet merchant ships, each of which has a doctor among the crew. In the past 20 years I have escorted many of these doctors on tours of the Los Angeles area but, of course, without their having any contact with the local medical fraternity.

One time aboard a ship the doctor removed a foreign object from my eye. He proceeded with this project in the same manner as I’ve experienced in any American doctor’s office, including the white jacket.
