Local News in Brief : Mayor’s Stolen Car Shot

Share

A 1984 Chrysler stolen from Hawthorne Mayor Betty J. Ainsworth has been found riddled with bullet holes and marked with gang graffiti and bloodstains, a sheriff’s spokesman said Friday.

The car was recovered at 120th Street and Success Avenue in Willowbrook, about six miles from Ainsworth’s home, where it was stolen Tuesday. Sheriff’s Lt. Curtis Spears said Ainsworth had left her car idling in the driveway while she went inside to pick up her purse and briefcase. When she emerged from the house, a man pushed her aside, jumped into the car and drove off.

Spears said investigators are not sure exactly what happened to the car but surmised that “it could have been used by a gang.”
