Sandy Lyle and Sam Torrance both birdied the final hole and gave Scotland a one-stroke lead in the third round of the 33rd World Cup of Golf Friday at Kapalua, Hawaii.

Lyle and Torrance each had one-under-par 71s as Scotland finished three rounds at 425, seven under par on the Bay course.

Their last-hole heroics were necessary to overcome the spectacular individual performance of Ian Woosnam of Wales.

Woosnam, winner of five European tournaments this year, had the best round of the tournament, a 65 that tied the course record and lifted Wales into second place.

The United States, the leader at the turn, wound up third at 428 after Ben Crenshaw encountered putting problems on the back nine. Crenshaw finished with a 69, and Payne Stewart shot a 73.

Craig Stadler shot a 65 for a 36-hole total of 136 to jump from 21st to third after two rounds of the $1-million Dunlop Phoenix tournament at Miyazaki, Japan. Stadler is two strokes behind leader Tadami Ueno, who shot a 68 for a 134 total, and one back of runner-up Hiroshi Makino.

Six players--Orville Moody, Lee Elder, Bob Charles, Pat Schwab, Bob Brue and Bill Johnston--shot two-under-par 69s to share the first round lead in a $300,000 seniors tournament at Key Biscayne, Fla.
