Between the Lines

Following in the musical footsteps of such films as “Ode to Billy Joe” and “Who’ll Stop the Rain” comes word from producer Robert Solo that he has acquired Kris Kristofferson’s ‘60s anthem, “Me and Bobby McGee.”

But Solo (remake of “Invasion of the Body Snatchers,” the upcoming “Colors,” the shooting “The Winter People” with Kurt Russell and Kelly McGillis) noted: “I’ve only just concluded getting the rights after eight months of legal negotiations. So, there’s no writer and the vaguest of ideas. Kris will serve as a story consultant.”

He said it’s not the first time he’s started from a wispy premise. “I’ve been listening to the song a lot and was a bit shocked to realize there’s far less of a story than I seemed to remember in the lyrics. But there’s something Zen-like and resonant in ‘freedom’s just another word for nothing left to lose.’ ”
